Isle of Wight Distillery – Mermaid Gin Overview

Firstly, it has to be said, this bottle is possibly one of the best looking gin bottles we’ve seen on the market. It’s the bottle alone which we’ve heard users saying is the reason they’ve purchased this gin and to be fair, we can’t argue with that!

The Isle of Wight is a small island based off the south coast of England, it’s known for its fresh sea-air, seaside beaches and seafront promenades. The Isle of Wight Distillery was founded by two friends, Xavier Baker and Conrad Gauntlett, since launching, the distillery has created a number of gin brands including HMS Victory Navy Strength Gin, Rock Sea Vodka and of course, Mermaid Gin.

“Mermaid gin is so smooth and enjoyable its seductive flavours can be enjoyed without drowning it in tonic.”

Mermaid Gin is quite the eco-friendly gin, it’s handmade, uses organic ingredients and comes in a fully recyclable bottle with biodegradable paint, this all ties in neatly within the brand and what they stand for. The gin is a small-batch gin which utilises 10 botanicals including: Rock samphire, elderflower, organic citrus zest, orris root, angelica root, liquorish root, juniper, grains of paradise and boadicea hops and English coriander.

The gin itself has a very fresh, zesty taste with juniper notes followed through with more citrus overtones on the finish. It’s smooth yet complex, so doesn’t require much tonic to be enjoyed how it should be.

Serving Recommendation

We recommend just a few Juniper berries (as recommended by Mermaid Gin) with a cucumber twist to bridge some of the tones together. Could also be enjoyed in a Martini.

  • 25-50ml Mermaid Gin
  • 100-150ml Premium Indian Tonic
  • 4 Juniper Berries (crushed if preferable)
  • Cucumber twist
  • Serve over ice

Overall

Mermaid Gin is a joy to drink, its smooth and complex zesty taste works a treat as a highly refreshing and invigorating serve. As well as the gin, the bottle also makes this gin something which is quite special, especially to gin enthusiasts.
